French painter, engraver and illustrator, also a sculptor, Louise Abbema is known for her Parisian portraits, her genre scenes and her still lifes. Daughter of Viscount Emile Léon Abbéma, she was a student of Charles Chaplin, Jean Jacques Henner and Carolus Duran. She became famous thanks to a portrait of Sarah Bernhardt who was also her companion. An assertive feminist, she was part of the delegation of French women artists presented at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. She had a studio at n°47 Rue Laffitte in Paris.
