François Xavier Jacob FREYTAG (1749 - 1817) General, L.A.S. addressed to General Bourcier (1760-1828), dated 23 pluviose year VIII (12 February 1800) about horse convoys. 1 sheet of two pages. "I mandated you citizen general, by my letter of the 16 current, that it had left Vissembourg the same day a convoy of 61 horses for Vesoul and Lion. This convoy was delayed in Strasbourg by the blunder of an adjutant of [?] and did not leave until yesterday, the 22nd. The brigade commander Pultiere added 30 horses to it, which brings the number of those who will arrive at Vesoul to 41 and those who are headed for Lion to 50. Here are thus 306 horses supplied from the department of Bas-Rhin. As soon as the horses that you thought you should refuse have arrived, they will be replaced. I have been informed that a first convoy of 40 horses has left from the department of the Haut Rhin; by dint of stimulating the administration of this department, I hope to succeed in activating the delivery which has been very late. I have just received your letter of the 21st of this month, citizen General, and I will immediately make its contents known to the chief of the multière brigade, whose zeal and good will are known to me. As for his knowledge in the part of the horses, I naturally suppose it in a military who for 25 years serves in the cavalry and who always made a kind of very active service. Besides, if one managed to deceive on some horses, I am persuaded that his severe attention will put him under cover in the future of similar surprises. I think that the collection of the contingent of the department of the Bas-Rhin will be finished at the end of this month and I have reason to believe that you will be satisfied. The whole of the collection of the department of the Bas-Rhin brings the greatest zeal to finish this important operation. Please accept my fraternal greetings."
