BRÉVAL, Jean-Baptiste. Treatise on the Cello. Op. 42. Paris, Janet and Cotelle, undated [1804]. Call number 346. In-4° of 205 pp. engraved, including a full-page cellist. Green half-basin. Long spine decorated with double gilt fillets and daisies, gilt title " Méthode de basse ", gilt supra-libris at the foot, lemon edges (period binding). First edition of one of the first cello methods. Rare. Copy of Alfred FONCLAUSE, as indicated at the foot of the spine of the binding (relative of Claude Joseph Fonclause (1799-1862), one of the most skilled bow makers of his time?) Some foxing, small pale green ink stain on the edge that has formed a small ring at the top of the outer margin of pages 131 at the end, without affecting the engravings. The binding is quite damaged. The interior remains quite fresh.
