Shiva nataraja. Bronze. India. 19th c.
Four-armed, dancing on the demon, Apasmarapurusha, the personification of ignorance, in the side hands he holds a small drum and a flame. In the hair piled high a snake holds a skull. Seven strands of hair flutter on either side of the head. The demon holds the snake, which has fallen from Shiva's wrist, and rests on a double lotus base above a rectangular, molded pedestal. Shiva moves within a circular flame aureole surmounted by a lion mask.
