Small side cabinet. China, Qing dynasty, 19th century.
Rosewood.
With export sealing wax seal.
Measurements: 26 x 76 x 25 cm.
Small low piece of furniture with a rectangular plan, defined by the marked horizontality typical of Chinese furniture. It is raised on spiral-shaped, grecate legs, and its front has three drawers with metal handles. Its waist is decorated with two openwork motifs in the form of synthesised dragons, a symbol of the changing power of nature, the Tao, as well as the concept of yang (masculine). It is, in turn, related to the weather as the bringer of rain and water. It is also often used as a national symbol of China, and was in fact on the national flag until the end of the Qing dynasty.
