Beyond the influence of the Western avant-garde, abstraction in Chinese painting came through its own channels. Many artists recognize that there was no break with traditional Chinese painting, as the search for the essentiality of the natural world already existed in the old masters. Traditional painting was never properly realistic. The randomness in the fall of the ink, the extreme simplicity, the spirit captured in the stain, is what painters of the first half of the 20th century (before Mao banned non-propagandist painting) rescued from their ancestors.
