The predilection of the sculptor Joseph Bernard for the theme of dance, which he explored intensely in the 1920s, is well known. Fascinated by dancing figures, he continued his quest to represent the body in movement by also representing male figures inspired by the world of sports. After the figure of the Dancing Faun from the ballet performed by the dancer Vaslav Nijinsky, he executed a small body of sportsmen in the late 1920s including a Figure for an Athlete, Man Wearing an Altar and our Boxer.
