Eugène Guillaume (1822-1905)
Portrait of the architect Alexis Paccard (1817-1867)
Bronze medallion with brown patina
Signed " E. GUILLAUME " under the edge of the neck
Diam. 17,5 cm, in a blackened wooden frame 37 x 35 cm
This profile is that of the architect Alexis Paccard, after the marble medallion made by Eugène Guillaume to decorate the funeral monument of his friend located in the Père Lachaise cemetery. The sculptor, a student of James Pradier at the École des Beaux-Arts and winner of the Prix de Rome in 1845, pays tribute to the architect for whom he gave a eulogy at his funeral on August 21, 1867. Like this speech, this portrait, painted a year later, reflects the friendship and mutual respect between the two artists. A second bronze medallion is kept at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
