Montesquieu (Charles Louis Secondat, Baron de) - The spirit of the laws. Leiden, at the associated booksellers 1749. In-4° full calf of the time, viii pp. 8 ff. 369, 396 pp. 7 ff. Third uncommon edition, published less than one year after the first one in Geneva by Barillot in 1748. It is unknown to Tchemerzine, Brunet and Cioranescu. It is a counterfeit of the original edition published by the Duplain brothers in Lyon and printed by Aimé de La Roche. Copy complete of the 2 errata leaves. The work was put on the Index on November 29, 1751 and condemned by the Sorbonne. Good condition, slight fading on the title page and on the first 20 pages.
