Biography:
At the death of his father, which occurred in 1806, he inherited a duchy occupied by Napoleonic troops and administered by France. When the Treaty of Tilsitt was signed on July 7 and 9, 1807, his duchy, initially dissolved, was returned to him thanks to the intervention of Tsar Alexander I. He was the father of Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria.
