Hieronymus Wierix (1553-1619) - Madonna on the crescent moon / Description: We recognize the apocalyptic woman from John 12:1 in which a woman, clothed with the sun and with the crescent moon under her feet, appears in the sky. On her head she wears the crown of 12 stars. A finely carved Christ child tenderly caresses her cheeks. The exquisite rendering of the folds in the fabrics characterizes the Wierix brothers' refined style. The subscript is derived from Song of Songs 2:16 and here reflects the intimate bond of love between mother and child. / Dimensions: 8,70 x 6,00 cm / Condition: Fine dark impression, trimmed within on the plate edge / Literature: Mauquoy-Hendrickx 1979 / Les Estampes des Wierix ... catalogue raisonné (710) ---- Alvin 1866 / Catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre des trois frères Jan, Jérome et Antoine Wierix (529) / Medium: Engraving /Circa: Before 1619
