Banville has inscribed the title Sonnets Antiques in the phylactery unrolled in the center of the decorative band.
The sonnets, of which only the first one is titled, come from the collections Le Sang de la coupe (the 1st and the 3rd) and Les Princesses (the 2nd). Naked Amazon: "Amazon with strong loins, solid centauress" [Pasiphaé]: "Thus Pasiphaé, the daughter of the Sun" The Thessalie: "O Thessalie! It is in your picturesque mounts" [Thessaly].
The text in prose is extracted from the novel by letters (in collaboration) The Resurrection of Lazarus: " Funambule!
