We thank Hendrikje Warmt for kind information. With an expert opinion by Hendrikje Warmt, Berlin, dated September 24, 2022 Provenance For several decades in private ownership Berlin Karl Hagemeister's landscape paintings impressively show the intensity with which the painter not only visually grasped nature, but experienced it with all his senses. The area around his hometown Werder an der Havel with its lakes, forests and moors offered the artist diverse, unspoiled landscapes, which he captured atmospherically dense at different times of the day and year. For this forest scene, Hagemeister used an extreme vertical format that corresponds to the orientation of the slender towering tree trunks. The picture is cropped narrowly, focusing on the watercourse that meanders between the trees. This leads the viewer's gaze far into the depth of the picture, its still surface reflecting the trunks and sections of the sky. The atmosphere of a cold autumn day is palpable in the hazy air and cool color mood. "The landscape is still, graceful, and really only lives through the mood, which I've loved more and more lately. [...] When I wanted to express myself soulfully, I broke down the mood tone into two tones, the light tone and the shadow tone. These I stroked over the whole canvas and now developed from this great mood tone all other things in their particular tones. In this way the coloration of my pictures was organically and not merely tastefully tuned together," Hagemeister described the substance of his art (quoted from: Karl Hagemeister (1848-1933).
