The souks and markets of the Orient are a source of wonder for the traveler. Majorelle found inexhaustible inspiration in these markets rich in color, scent and variety. The colorful crowd that crowds along the stalls, rich women accompanied by servants, hucksters or beggars, all fascinating characters for the painter's brush.
In our painting, the painter has chosen to describe the press and the world in this market. Two women in the foreground present fabrics on the ground. They do not seem to be interested in the walkers in the background who have their backs to them. The composition of this work shows the hustle and bustle of the market, very little space dedicated to the environment. However, despite the crowd, no impression of warmth emerges. Majorelle chose colors ranging from beige to brown. Only the women wear colored scarves, red for one, blue for the other.
