RELATED WORK
Georges Rouault (1871-1958). Repos sous l'ombrage I, 1910-1912, India ink, oil paint, watercolor, and charcoal, 18 x 30 CM, held in the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
"He [Rouault] does not refuse to see, in adventure, a happy humanity in landscapes of happiness. Sometimes it is made of couples that love introduces into happiness. In other cases, it is a work well done which gives satisfaction to the one who exercises it. Then, of course, nature gets in tune. When he proposes a dramatic version of the outside world, he often introduces an element of hope (...) Let us now note its plastic role, a role whose necessity is perceived when we read in a letter from Rouault to Suarès dated March 15, 1916: "I see more and more large lines (underlined in the text) or beautiful colored planes (...) three small figures composing themselves with the line and the harmony (id.) of the landscape, but not including and not disturbing the big lines (id.)"
