During a trip near Annecy in 1886, the painter Albert Besnard and his wife, the sculptor Charlotte Besnard, discovered the bay of Talloires and were immediately seduced by the beauty of this place. In his memories, the painter shares this moment with us: "We came to Annecy, tempted by the beauty of a lake we had been told was wonderful. We went around the lake, and when the boat stopped at the pontoon of Talloires, without hesitating, on the sole inspection of the banks, our choice was made".
The following year, he commissioned the famous Annecy architect Louis Ruphy to undertake the work on their future residence. The villa in Talloires became the refuge of the Parisian painter, who, escaping the mundane life of the capital, spent his time painting. Jean-Francis Auburtin, invited by his friend, stayed there several times. Also seduced by the setting, during his stays he produced a series of works representing bucolic scenes inspired by antiquity, where his famous isadorables appear in a richly flowered decor. The work we are presenting is part of this series painted at the villa in Talloires, where in this vast expanse of lake, the trees allow us to see the famous summit of Entrevernes.
