JEAN-CLAUDE FOURNIER
SPIROU AND FANTASIO
The rigged abbey (T.22), Dupuis 1972
Original plate n° 35, prepublished in the Journal de Spirou
n° 1758 of December 23, 1971. Signed. India ink on paper
30.1 × 44 cm (11.85 × 17.32 in.)
Cut shot, close-up on the soles of the kidnappers, slight low angle. Jean-Claude Fournier varies his focus. In the middle section, Fantasio, Spip and Spirou are wondering how best to rescue their friend Itoh Kata. In the lower strip, the leader of the gang has more and more difficulty to bear the presence of the bugs left by the Japanese magician and, following his shoe, might well lose his mind.
The cutting is a bit unusual with this cut shot. Low-angle, cutaway shot on the pairs of shoes of the "villains". The low angle puts the reader in a dominant position. This is always interesting. The cutaway shot is justified by the crunching of the shoes on the floor of the abbey. J.-C.F.
