[EMBLEMATA] ALCIAT (André). Omnia Andreae Alciati V. C. Emblemata : Cum commentariis, quibus Emblematum omnium aperta origine, mens authoris explicatur, & obscura omnia dubiaque illustrantur. Per Claudium Minoem [...] Parisiis : apud H. de Marnef et viduam G. Cavellat, 1583. Small in-8 (115 mm x 180 mm) of (8) ff. n. ch., 717-(3) pp. in contemporary brown calf binding, spine ribbed and decorated with flowers but not titled, gilt irons in the center of the boards, edges gilt. Title with frame, 211 emblems (woodcuts) in text. This collection of allegories in Latin verses on moral subjects was very successful in Europe and was the subject of more than one hundred reprints, it is the best known work of Alciat. It is the first Parisian edition of the Emblem with the commentary of Claude Mignault. This "pirate" edition, published 17 days after the expiration of the privilege without the consent of the author of the commentary, follows the edition published in 1581 by Christophe Plantin in Antwerp (Voet, I 29). Binding damage, 2 corners damaged, names of a former owner scratched on the boards, a tiny wormhole affects the ends of the upper margins of the first 80 pages without seriousness, the rest of the text is very decent.
