APIAN (Petrus). Petri Apiani Cosmographia, per Gemmam Phrysium, apud Louanienses Medicum ac Mathematicum Insignem restituta. Additis de adem [sic] ipsius Gemmae Phry. libellis, vt. sequens pagine docet. Vaeneunt Antverpiae : in pingui gallina A. Berckmanno, 1539. Pt. in-4° (238 mm x 160 mm), LXI ff. e.g. from f. III and 1 f. not e.g., bookseller's mark on verso of last f. (hen at the foot of a tree in an escutcheon standing out on a pedestal at the base of which one reads : Arnoldus Birckman). Bound in brown calf, spine ribbed, filleted in cold, gilt irons on the corners and in the center of the boards. Ornate initials, numerous woodcut figures, including one on the title signed G. and 4 cosmographic figures with movable sections (volvelles). It should be noted that the figure on the verso of f. XI has just a string, often given as a fifth volvelle, it has no moving parts. After research, it seems that it is normal, the editions of 1540 and 1545 published by the same publisher for the one and by Gregorio Bontio for the other present the same aspect on the digitized copies. This famous work was republished many times in the 16th century and was first published in 1524. This edition seems to be the second one published in Latin, it does not include a map, this one appearing only in 1545 according to van Ortray Defects to the binding, brittle open jaws, missing top and bottom of the spine, corners worn, whitish marks on the second board, edges of the first four leaves chipped, handwritten bookplate to the title, missing cords on the scroll on the verso of f. XIII, faint wetness in the lower margin of part of the work, otherwise good condition.
