Cabbage leaf tapestry in wool and silk. It represents a dog with a collar in the middle of a lush forest of leaves and flowers. Work of Flanders XVIth. 165x114. Literature: The tapestries known as cabbage leaf draw their name from the exuberant presence of foliage, close to the leaves of Crucifera. They are among the most remarkable and mysterious of tapestries. The visual dynamism of the design is provided by the profusion of wild foliage that seems to bring the motif out of the darkness. The cabbage leaf tapestries appear in the middle of the first half of the 16th century and probably derive from the "millefleurs" tapestries. While the latter kept an apparent peace and order and were drawn without any perspective, the cabbage leaf tapestries with their large leaves show a rich and spontaneous imaginary nature. The tapestry that we present has a particular dimension. It represents an extremely elegant and refined dog with a collar in the middle of motives of flowers giving a magic and fantastic dimension. This representation remains disarming as for its exoticism and the amateur is invited to enter an unknown world luxuriant and almost mysterious.
