ITALIAN SCHOOL of the XVIIth. "Venus with an apple". Bronze with brown patina on a marble base of the period. H.bronze 19,5 H.total 26. Literature : Venus was a very old Latin divinity who protected the vegetation of the gardens. But the Romans assimilated her completely to the Greek Aphrodite. They claimed to be Enneads (descendants of Aeneas whose mother was Aphrodite) and she is represented with the apple since this was one of the usual attributes of Aphrodite.
