BERTOLDO DI GIOVANNI. (Follower of) "Battle scene". Bronze with brown patina on a marble base. Northern Italy (Florence) of the 16th century. Bronze 22,2cm x 23cm. H.total 32. Provenance : private collection Milan (Italy), renowned for its beautiful bronze statuettes of the Renaissance. Note : This bronze is possibly an equestrian sketch of Giuliano de Medici crushing the enemies of the Florentine republic. The general aesthetics of the horse, in particular the head and the round wrinkles around the cheek, the small pricked ears, the mouth, the lips and the nostrils recall the Pegasus and Bellerophon by Bertoldo de Giovanni. It can be compared to a drawing by Leonardo exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
