CARRIER OF CUP JALISCO. Important feminine statue, she is presented seated in a codified posture and holds respectfully in her hands a potion cup probably intended to contain hallucinogens used during religious ceremonies. Her overall form expresses a concept of strength and power. She wears rich ornaments attesting to her important rank within the clan. Her face is decorated with ceremonial paintings, her head is encircled by a helmet with a sagittal crest held in place by intertwined straps and a central diadem. This crest indicates that this is a female shaman. Orange-beige and coffee-red terracotta (broken and glued in four places). Good general state of conservation Jalisco, western Mexico, 100 BC - 250 AD. 57x27cm. Provenance : former collection of Arturo Aguinaga, Barcelona, acquired from Federico Benthem in the 1970s.
