Pierre Jeanneret (Swiss, 1896-1967) Classroom Chair, c. 1955 Teak structure, side table forming a writing desk, compass base, seat and back cane. Height 79,5 Width 59 Dep 60 cm. Pierre Jeanneret moved to Chandigarh in 1951 to supervise the urban planning and architectural work of his cousin Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, known as Le Corbusier. The new capital of the Punjab is applied the principle of "seven lanes of traffic" in addition to the erection of buildings of new times. Pierre Jeanneret dresses the interior of these architectures after having designed himself the furniture of his own house. Based on his personal experiments, he applies the theories of this artist's furniture to a serial production whose furniture must withstand intensive and public use. Jeanneret adapted to the local materials and labor of the Punjabi workshops. The teak is extracted from the surrounding forests. Several ranges are then defined according to the typology of the legs.
