Charles Lapicque (French, 1898-1988) "Bonheur antique", 1978 Canvas signed and dated lower left, titled, signed and dated on the back. Height: 97 cm Width: 130 cm. Provenance : - Lapicque estate - Alain and Violette Merle collection - Antoine Van de Beuque gallery, 2003 - private collection, Basque Country. Painted in 1978, this "Antique Happiness" is at the confluence of several series. The last decade was indeed the occasion for the painter to associate his aesthetic vocabulary of the past with his contemporary reflections on the treatment of colors and space. Recalling by its large size and its flat colors the "Tiger of the Ming" - a historical work of the artist - our canvas also offers real similarities with the paintings of the series "Hunting". The trees presented frontally, the animals in a wild environment or the round of muses are between tradition and modernity.
