Switzerland is perhaps one of the artist's most confidential destinations. He discovered the Swiss provinces during a first trip in 1936 on the occasion of two openings in Lausanne and Zurich. He extended his peregrinations to Montreux, where the mountain landscapes enchanted him. The following year, between January and early spring, Marquet stayed again in Montreux, on the shores of Lake Geneva. This stay inspired a series of paintings in which our painting is included. Painting from his hotel room, Marquet captures the changes in the climate. In the city, the snow is only at the foot of the trees and on the edge of the wall, while the blue of the mountains hides the eternal snows.
