Yves Brayer (French, 1907-1990) Les petites gitanes aux Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, 1943 Canvas signed lower left. Label of the gallery Saluden in Quimper on the frame. Height 55 cm, width 38 cm. Mr. Olivier Brayer, the painter's son, rightful owner and co-author of the Catalogue Raisonné of the painted work, has confirmed the authenticity of this canvas which he adds to the addendum of the Catalogue Raisonné under the n°4659. "The painter-witness finds however without displeasure the human spectacles of this singular world. But it is at the uncertain edges of the waters, when the Gypsies and the Gadjos celebrate, for different reasons, the black saints Marie Jacobé, Marie Salomé and Sara, on May 25. He is amused by the swarming of the etic horses and the fortune-telling gypsies, gluttonizing their children with their lousy asses in the dust."
