Ernest de LANDERSET (1832-1907). Swiss school. "Portrait of a Second Lieutenant of a Company of Grenadiers of the 2nd Swiss Regiment in the Service of the Kingdom of Naples, in Front of Vesuvius." Oval watercolor, signed and dated 1856 lower right. Marked with a pen on the back "Ma tendre Maria, Naples ce 12 fev 1856 35 x 26 cm A.B.E. (small wear, folds at the top and bottom touching the signature) History: This portrait could represent Ernest de Landerset himself, the latter serving in the 2nd Swiss Regiment in the service of Naples as a second lieutenant in 1856. He became a captain in 1859. Landerset married Jeanne Isodorine Marie de Longes in 1860. His brother Alfred, who died in 1852, served in this regiment. Other members of his family also served in the regiment at the time of our watercolor, such as Rodolphe de Weck (1826-1861). Several portraits of officers of the 2nd Swiss Regiment by Landerset are known. Biography : Ernest de LANDERSET (1832-1907), second lieutenant in the 2nd Swiss regiment in the service of Naples (1853), lieutenant (1859), cross of St-Georges, he was also a painter of genre, portraits, landscapes, and miniaturist. A student of Calame in Geneva and of the two Vernet in Paris, he lived from 1860 to 1870 in Marseille, then from 1871 in Paris where he painted numerous miniature portraits of members of royal and princely families, landscapes and military scenes. He exhibited, among others, at the 1874 and 1877 salons. We thank Mr. Massimo Fiorentino, for his information on the Swiss regiments in the service of the Kingdom of Naples.
