[Incunabula]. GUY DE ROYE. [Le doctrinal de sapience, by Guy de Roye. Lyon, Guillaume Le Roy, 1485]. In-folio, [74 (of 82)] f., modern half parchment in the Bradel style and with corners, smooth and mute spine (4 worm holes crossing the vol., 2 in the margins, 2 in the text without seriousness; margins a little yellowed, some moderate soiling).
Extremely rare edition from Lyon, one of the very first incunabula editions of this work published in France. This manual for the use of modest Christians would have been composed in the 14th century by Guy de Roye (1345-1409), archbishop of Sens, then of Reims; it was widely distributed from the end of the 15th century until the 17th century and even beyond. The Catalogue collectif des incunables (GW) locates only 3 copies: BnF, Bibl. mun. d'Auxerre, Bibl. mun. de Toulouse, the latter incomplete at the end.
This copy is missing 6 leaves (a1, a2, a7, a 8, k1, k2, k9, k10); photographic reproductions of the 2 woodcuts of the BnF copy have been inserted (leaves [1] and [82]).
Initials painted in red at the time on typographed waiting letters, small capitals enhanced in yellow at the beginning of the volume. Large margins (h=258 to 260 mm).
