Roofs of Paris, c. 1842
Photographic engraving made from a daguerreotype
6.4 x 9.2 cm (14 x 17.6 cm)
"Brevière was also seriously engaged in transforming the daguerreotype proofs into engraved plates (...) Brevière's three attempts are exceedingly rare (...). They are: his own portrait; a view of roofs (taken from his studio, then located in Paris), rue des Boulangers; and a fragment of the bas-reliefs of the Cathedral of Paris (the funeral of the Virgin). These three plates obtained at first in daguerreotype, were simply transformed into cuves by the turning up of the edges, bitten with acid, transformed into intaglio. Then the edges folded back with a hammer, they were made into printing ink proofs." - Brevière, Adeline (Jules), L.-H. Brevière, draftsman and engraver, renovator of woodcutting in France; 1797-1869. Notes on the Life and Works of a Norman Artist. Rouen, E. Augé, 1876, p.95-97.
