MONET (Claude). Autograph letter signed "Claude Monet" to Adolphe Portier. Giverny (Eure), May 11, 1897. 1 p. 1/4 in-12, header printed at his address in Giverny.
"My dear Portier, as agreed, I expect you on Friday morning by the 8 o'clock train from Paris which arrives in Vernon at 9:20 a.m. A car will be waiting for you at the station. Sincerely... P.S. If you have them, you will be kind enough to BRING ME THE PRICES OF THE MAIN TABLES OF THE AUBRY SALE, but I fully expect the bidding to be less than spirited, at such a time." Paul Aubry's collection, which was sold at auction on May 10, 1897, achieved relatively disappointing results, although the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel bought four of the five Claude Monet paintings in it.
ONE OF THE FIRST SUPPORTERS OF THE IMPRESSIONISTS, THE ART MERCHANT ALPHONSE PORTIER defended Corot, Cézanne or Monet, and was in charge of the fourth impressionist exhibition.
