MATISSE (Henri). Autograph letter signed [probably to Henry de Montherlant]. Hotel Le Regina, in the district of Cimiez in Nice, December 20, 1938. 1 p. 3/4 in-folio.
"Dear Sir, I have only just received the publisher's reply about PASIPHAE. He says to me: "I apologize on the other hand for not having answered you earlier about the Pasiphaé edition. Unfortunately, I believe that it will be very difficult for me, in the present conditions of my work, to take care of this book. I especially do not have the time to produce, [as] I would like, a deluxe edition, and to organize its launching." I sincerely regret that I did not succeed, but perhaps other fortunate circumstances will arise that will allow me to revisit this idea.
I hope you are still in good health and that the snow will bring you back this way. I shall be glad to see you again. I am still wobbly and have to take great care to keep my activity. - Finally I am not young anymore... "
The illustrated edition by Henri Matisse of Henry de Montherlant's Pasiphaé would finally appear in 1944 in Paris with Martin Fabiani.
