"I certify that in the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety-one, I made for Mr. Deviette [Jacques-Pierre-André Jourdain Deviette] the portrait of M[a]d[am]e his wife [Charlotte-Aimée Marye Laquaize] rather by friendship than by interest, which he asks me for his own enjoyment, and I certify moreover that I undertook to oblige him to have made by de Bréa [Charles-Paul-Jérôme Bréa], painter in miniature, a copy of this same portrait to be placed on a tabatierre that he intended for his father-in-law [Jacques Marye Laquaize], of which objects having been delivered he gave me at the same time thirty-three louis of which twenty-five five for the painting and eight for the copy... "
