This carved group depicts St. Anne teaching the young Mary to read.
young Mary. This iconographic theme spread in the late medieval period when the cult of Mary's mother developed. Here, the richness brought to the clothing details (cf. the belt with links ending in a tassel or the crown of the Virgin), the shape of the eyes or the treatment of the drapery (double tubular folds on the headdress, parallel and vertical pleats on the front of the dress, angular folds flaring out at the base on small wooden pedestals), The style and composition are close to the manner of the Master of Koudewater, a sculptor active in the north of the Duchy of Brabant during the second half of the 15th century, of whom only a dozen works have been identified.
