CHODERLOS DE LACLOS (PIERRE DE) Les Liaisons dangereuses, ou Lettres recueillies dans une société, publiées pour l'instruction de quelques autres Amsterdam, Paris, Durand Neveu, 1782. 4 volumes in 2 vols. in-12, I : 248 and 242 pp., II : 231 and 257 pp. in marbled calf, spines decorated with red titles and greefs (contemporary binding) Very rare second edition: it contains all the characteristics of the type "B" described by Max Brun (Bibliography of the Dangerous Liaisons editions bearing the year 1782, "Le Livre et l'Estampe", 1963, n°33, pp. 10-13). The first edition of Choderlos de Laclos' masterpiece (original edition "A") was a huge success, and the 2000 copies printed in April 1782 were sold out in one month; the bookseller Durand immediately produced this second edition, and even used existing quires of the previous edition; the errors pointed out in the erratum at the end of volume IV of the original edition "A" have been corrected. Old handwritten bookplate on the title of a large family of Lozere: "Borne d'Altier". I, p. 45 : marginal tear reaching qq letters of the notes. II, false-title : small tears without marginal without lack. Angular stains, a few freckles. Lacking at the headpieces, bindings rubbed, corners dulled.
