Tapestry of Audenarde (Flanders), from the 16th century Technical characteristics : Wool and silk Dimensions : Height : 255cm ; Width : 170cm This tapestry tells us a mythological scene which takes place in Arcadia (Peloponnese region), country which was celebrated, by the arts, as being the symbol of a preserved, wild and harmonious nature. In the flowery undergrowth of a deep forest, Alpheus, a river god, dressed in blue and lying on a rock, assisted by a noble lady, reveals to three Arcadian shepherds with their staffs, the presence of the nymph Arethusa, changed into a spring, under the flat stone, by the goddess Artemisia who wanted to protect her, Alpheus having no end of wanting to merge his waters with her. This happens under the impassive eye of many grazing sheep. A certificate of authenticity of the expert, Mr Frank KASSAPIAN, will be given to the purchaser.
