Gothic Christ. Spain, 14th-15th centuries. Bronze with gilded polychrome. Measurements: 14 x 12 cm . Round sculpture, representing Christ crucified with his head fallen on his chest. Formally, the anatomy of Christ stands out with hair, beard and marked pectorals. The cloth of purity is tied on the left side. The Gothic Christ is also a reflection of the period. Faced with the suffering of the faithful, the preference is for a human, suffering Christ, who shares the hardships of his people. It is often a dead Christ, more naturalistic. In contrast to the Romanesque, the Gothic period was much more unstable and full of changes. There were conflicts between kingdoms, heresies and the development of the economy called into question a Christianity plagued by schisms and the crisis of scholasticism, and a climatic change brought a much harsher and colder climate, which resulted in worse harvests, famines and a consequent demographic decline. And, finally, they will suffer the lethal Black Death, the cause of great mortality.
