The farewell of Don Juan. Dramatic poem. Paris, Labitte, 1844. Large in-8 of (2) ff, 114 pp, black half calf with corners, spine nicely decorated with rocaille irons, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (Semet et Plumelle). First edition of this play in three acts and a prologue, the first book of Gobineau, published on author's account. Very rare. According to Léon Deffoux (see below), only five copies are known. A nice copy. From the Sicklès library (IV, 1990, n° 1143). Enclosed: - Alexandre le Macédonien. Tragedy in five acts (posthumous work). Strasbourg, Trübner, 1901. In-8 of XVIII pp, (2) ff, 101, (1) pp, bradel half morocco, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine kept (Honnelaître). First edition. Original text in French, preface and afterword by Ludwig Schemann in German. "Piece received at the Comédie française and not performed because of the Revolution of February 1848" (Talvart, VII, 178). Like many of Gobineau's unpublished works, it was translated into German with a preface by Ludwig Schemman, a great admirer of the author to whom he had been introduced by Wagner and whose to whom he had been introduced by Wagner and whose editor and first biographer he became. The third of these aspects is devoted to the Farewells of Don Juan and to the mysterious society of the Cousins of Isis, founded by Gobineau with some writers and artists of his generation, among whom Maxime du Camp, a society which sponsored the work and whose name appears in small characters above the title. Author's letter, partly erased.
