FEDERICO RODRÍGUEZ DOMÍNGUEZ QUINTANA (Madrid, 1876 - Málaga, 1942). "Un rincón de Málaga", 1909. Oil on original canvas. Signed, dated and titled in the lower right corner. Painting awarded an Honourable Mention at the National Exhibition of 1910. Measurements: 135.5 x 192 cm; 167.5 x 223 cm (frame). In this canvas of considerable dimensions, under a limpid sky of Andalusian summer, orange and lemon trees loaded with fruits follow one after the other, occupying an irregular terrain, distributed around a slope also covered with greenery. The warm summer light filters through the dense canopy and casts shadows on the young tree bark. The play of light also meanders over the land, alternating full and empty, shading the tones, immersing us in aromatic clearings. Isolated farmhouses can be glimpsed in the distance. The painter shows a virtuoso and patient hand in faithfully reproducing each shoot and each branch with its fruit and foliage. The meadow is iridescent in a rich range of emerald greens, browns and yellows. The rural setting depicted, close to the city of Malaga, could be the area of the Limonar hills, although it is difficult to tell due to the way the place has changed over time. Federico Rodríguez Quintana taught painting at fine art schools. He received an honourable mention at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1910, a bronze medal at the Malaga Lyceum Exhibition (1891), and at the regional exhibition in Granada (1905), and a silver medal at the provincial exhibition in 1905. He was also awarded a diploma of merit at the Malaga art exhibition of 1901, and a second medal at the 1912 exhibition. His work is kept in the Malaga Provincial Council and the Malaga Museum of Fine Arts.
