The order to seize these artillery pieces to defend Paris was at the origin of the Commune insurrection, the work of Parisian socialists and workers who sought to manage public affairs on their own, without recourse to the State. It began on March 18, 1871, and was violently repressed during Bloody Week (May 21-27, 1871), on the orders of Adolphe Thiers.
