Still life with hunting trophy
Oil on canvas.
Height : 63,5 cm - Width : 53 cm
On a marble entablature, two grey partridges are resting next to the head of a hare hanging by one leg. On the left a wicker basket filled with fruits such as grapes and peaches, in the foreground a powder flask.
In the background, a large Medici vase and a tree trunk highlight a gap in nature.
A contemporary of Pieter Faes and Frans Van Dael, Speeckaert belongs to the neoclassical period of still life painting in Belgium. Flowers, fruits, birds, game and wicker baskets are his favorite subjects, which can be found almost systematically throughout his work.
