Bust of a woman Avalokitasvara, Vietnam, Cham period, 7th-9th century AD.
Sandstone.
Size: 64 x 26 x 20 cm.
Large torso made of sandstone from Vietnam. The piece represents a young, unadorned female body with prominent breasts and a beautifully rounded belly, wearing a long, pleated sarong tied at the front, the long central pleat culminating elegantly in a 'fishtail' shape at the hem, joined at the hips with a belt. Avalokitasvara, is a bodhisattva who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas. He has 108 avatars, one notable avatar is Padmap??i (the one holding a lotus). He is variously depicted, described and portrayed in different cultures as male or female. In Chinese Buddhism, his figures have evolved into the female form called Guanyin (pinyin: Gu?ny?n). He is also called Chenrizig. He is also one of the disciples of Amitabha Buddha.
The works of this style reflect foreign influence from a variety of sources, primarily the Khmer of pre-Angkor Cambodia, but also the art of Dvaravati, the Javanese art of Indonesia and South India.
