Spanish school of the 19th century. Follower of BARTOLOMÉ ESTEBAN MURILLO (Seville, 1617 - Cadiz, 1682).
"Purísima Concepción de Aranjuez".
Oil on canvas.
Signed "M. Alonso" in the lower right corner.
Frame of the 19th century with faults.
Measurements: 140 x 84 cm; 175 x 119 cm (frame).
This work faithfully follows the model of the Conception painted by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo around 1675-80, kept in the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, from where it was exhibited in the Prado Museum. The Virgin is dressed in white and blue, with her brown hair uncovered, as is customary in Murillo's iconography of the Immaculate Conception. Like the Sevillian, the painter uses a more Baroque approach, distributing several diagonals in the composition, softening and blurring the forms.
