THE MASTER OF CORTES (active in Paris around 1640-1660)
The Flagellation of Christ
Copper.
On a copper plate engraved with a fire pot with an inscription "Legeay".
32 x 26 cm.
(Small scratches and old restorations).
Under this convention name is grouped an artist close to the Le Nain brothers, but with a distinct personality, author of some twenty paintings, including "The Procession with a Ram" (Philadelphia, Philadelphia museum of Art) and the "Procession of the Fat Ox" (Paris, Picasso museum).
Our painting can be directly compared to the "Coronation of Thorns", acquired by the Louvre in 2002, also on copper (inv. RF.2002-13; 46 x 33,5 cm) and which presents the same combination of realistic details close to Le Nain (here, the rustic aspect of the executioners), of Italian monumentality (the ambitious composition, the base of the antique column).
Among his rare religious works, let us quote the Adoration of the shepherds (Berlin, Gemäldegalerie), the washing of the feet (Dijon, Musée des Beaux-Arts), the Assumption of the Virgin (Rennes, Musée des Beaux-Arts), The Holy Family (after Vignon, Parisian art trade), The Carrying of the Cross (Saint-Cloud, Musée du Grand Siècle, donation Pierre Rosenberg), The Crucifixion with Saint Mary Magdalene (private collection), all on copper, except for the first two mentioned which are on canvas.
We thank Mr. Jean-Pierre Cuzin for having confirmed the attribution to the Master of the Cortèges, by direct examination of the work.
