Wellcome II, 181 - Second edition, also the first illustrated with the famous color plate of Gautier d'Agoty. - "The first edition of this popular and frequently reissued book was published in 1745. This second edition contains a colored plate by Gautier d'Agoty depicting a dissection of the bladder, testicle, seminal vesicles, prostate gland, and penis with the full length of the urethra exposed" (Heirs of Hippocrates 858). - The work describes new forms of treatment for urethral strictures developed by Jacques Daran, which he practiced with great success in the French provinces and from 1754 in Paris. - The French. Anatomist and painter J. F. Gautier d'Agoty (1716-1785), a student of the engraver and painter J. C. Le Blon, developed a color printing process of mezzotint etching around 1740 in competition with his teacher. He published the first magazine with illustrations printed in color. Together with the physician Guichard Joseph Duverny, he published some anatomical plate works (cf. Choulant 108 ff.). - Colored bookplate ("Dr. Desnos"), minor worming at the beginning, lightly browned throughout, very good copy.
