This galaxy is often called "the black eye" or "the devil's eye", because of the dark band of dust that sweeps across one side of its bright core. This spiral galaxy is known to astronomers for its strange internal motion. The gas in the outer regions of this galaxy and the gas in the inner regions rotate in opposite directions, which could be related to a recent merger.
