NASA. LARGE FORMAT. DEEP SPACE. Carina Nebula. Massive stars can wreak havoc on their surroundings, as seen in this new view of the Carinae Nebula. The bright star at the center of the nebula is Eta Carinae, one of the most massive stars in the galaxy. Its blinding glare sculpts and destroys the surrounding nebula. Eta Carinae is a true giant star. It has about 100 times the mass of our sun and burns its nuclear fuel so fast that it is at least a million times brighter than the sun. It has brightened and dimmed over the years, and some astronomers believe it could explode into a supernova in the not-too-distant future. Such an explosion of energy comes at a significant cost to the surrounding nebula. The star's infrared light destroys dust particles, carving out cavities and leaving pillars of denser material pointing toward the star. The infrared view of the photograph allows us to see the dust, shown in red, as well as the hot, glowing gas clouds that appear in green.2013.Vintage chromogenic print.
