NASA. LARGE FORMAT. DEEP SPACE. Superb photograph of a green ring nebula in the darkest night of Deep Space. This region of hot gas and glowing dust lies in the cloudy clouds encircled by the tail of the constellation Scorpio. The dust ring actually glows in infrared colors that our eyes cannot see, but appear brilliantly when observed by infrared detectors. At the center of this ring are two giant stars whose intense ultraviolet light has hollowed out the bubble, although they blend in with the other stars when observed in the infrared. The green ring is where the dust is hit by the winds and intense light of the massive stars. The green color represents infrared light from tiny dust grains called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These small grains have been destroyed inside the bubble. The red color inside the ring shows slightly larger and hotter dust grains heated by the massive stars. 2011.period chromogenic print.
