Ɵ Poemata juvenilia. S.l.n.d. [Paris ca. 1562-1564?]. In-16, soft vellum with covers (Binding of the period).
A very rare counterfeit of the Latin poems of the Protestant humanist and theologian Theodore de Bèze (1519-1605), originally printed by Conrad Bade in Paris in 1548.
The title is adorned with a beautiful woodcut frame known as the "skull and crossbones".
The volume contains the Sylves, the Elegies, the Epitaphs, the Icons and the Epigrams. These pieces are preceded by a dedicatory epistle in which we learn that Theodore de Bèze delivered his youthful poems to the printer because he had been encouraged to do so by his mentor Melchior Volmar and the scholar Joachim Camerarius.
From the library of G. Margat, with photographic bookplate depicting two fishermen on foot in front of the Mont Saint-Michel.
Title a little foxed, the binder's knife has reached the numbering on one or two pages. Volume detached from the spine.
