From 1911 Nolde, whose real name was Hans Emil Hansen, but who adopted the name of his birthplace as his artist name, spent the winter months in Berlin. His apartment was near the zoo. His visits to the zoo and aquarium there in 1923 and 1924 resulted in a series of particularly charming watercolors, including this composition of three veiltails. Nolde succeeds particularly well in the three-dimensional idea of water set in motion, which he knows how to depict pictorially by applying the blue pigments to the Japanese paper in various densities and intensities. Small tear and a few compressive folds.
